Art cards or miniatures were the first known "wallet photo portraits" and were very popular in the 16th century.
Men would often have nudes painted of their mistresses on art cards (unknown to the wives, of course), usually by
the very artist who painted their large family portraits.

During the Impressionist Age, artists traded art cards among themselves as a means to study one another's
techniques.  They also traded or sold art cards for supplies, lodging and food.
The earliest
"baseball" cards
started to appear in
1887.   They were
not mass produced,
so these early
cards are extremely
rare.  It was during
the baseball golden
years of 1902
through 1935 that
cards began to be
sold with bubble
gum, Cracker Jack
and chewing
tobacco.  The cards
were produced in
different sizes to
accommodate
these products.  It
wasn't until the
1960s that the card
was standardized
into the modern
2.5" x 3.5" size.

There is a growing
resurgence today of
hand made art
cards, both for sale
and trade.  You can
find them in every
available artist
medium from
painting to drawing
to collage covering
every subject matter
under the sun.

So, this page is
dedicated to my
2.5" by 3.5" original
art cards.  Each
card is labeled and
signed on the back
and is sealed in a
snap together
plastic trading card
holder, where it
remains through
selling or trading.
